October 24, 2011

(Mississauga, ON, October 24, 2011) – The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) is proud to announce the names of the 2011 Family Physicians of the Year - 10 of the most exceptional family physicians from across the country. Every year, the College presents the Reg L. Perkin Award to one family physician from each province in recognition of his/her outstanding patient care; significant contributions to the health and well-being of their respective communities; and commitment to family medicine teaching and research. Award recipients are nominated by their colleagues, patients, community leaders and the CFPC’s provincial chapters.

Canada’s 2011 Family Physicians of the Year are:

  • Dr. Marjorie Docherty, Kelowna, British Columbia
  • Dr. Leonard Wade, Vulcan, Alberta
  • Dr. John Stewart McMillan, Regina, Saskatchewan
  • Dr. Joanne Maier, Brandon, Manitoba
  • Dr. Philip Hébert, Toronto, Ontario
  • Dre Johanne Blais, Boischatel, Québec
  • Dr Michel Landry, Dieppe, New Brunswick
  • Dr. Shelagh Leahey, Yarmouth, Nova Scotia
  • Dr. Peter Hooley, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island
  • Dr. Robert T. Miller, St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador

"We couldn’t be more proud to recognize these ten outstanding family physicians," said Dr. Robert Boulay, President of the CFPC. "As clinicians, they have demonstrated their dedication to providing the best possible care for their patients in addition to excelling as family medicine teachers and researchers and making unique and valued contributions to their home communities. The 2011 Family Physicians of the Year represent the rich diversity of family medicine, and exemplify why a career in family medicine is such a rewarding choice. The College commends them on their success."

"The CFPC is proud to present the Reg L. Perkin Awards to recognize the variety of accomplishments by family doctors across the country," added, Dr. Calvin Gutkin, Executive Director and CEO. "Our award recipients care for patients in private offices and clinics, nursing homes, hospitals, and community health centres. They work in big cities and small rural communities. They provide care for new born infants, elderly patients and all age groups in between. They also have very different areas of interest that they include in their practices: obstetrics, pediatrics, geriatric care, addictions medicine, aboriginal health, medical ethics, and sports medicine to name a few. Despite their differences, what they all have in common is their dedication to their patients, communities and the principles of family medicine."

This is the 39th year the College has honoured family physicians. Since 1996, it has been named in honour of Dr. Reg L. Perkin, CFPC Executive Director from 1985 to 1996. The awards are presented as part of Family Doctor Week in Canada which this year runs from October 31 to November 5, 2011.

The award presentations will be made during a ceremony at the CFPC’s annual Family Medicine Forum in Montreal, on Tuesday, November 1. The awards are supported by Merck Canada, and the CFPC’s Research and Education Foundation.
