The ALSO® (Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics) Provider Course offers effective methods for management of obstetrical care emergencies. The two-day ALSO Provider Course is an intensive, hands-on learning experience for all participants.

  • Pre-reading assignments and minimal use of lectures, as well as use of scenario-based workstations and mannequins, allows learners the opportunity to engage in the curriculum.
  • Provider status is valid for a period of five years.

Those who wish to extend or renew their ALSO® Provider status can attend a one-day ALSO® Refresher Course (see bottom of page for details).

Who should attend?

The two-day educational program has been developed to meets the needs of all members of the maternity care team, including family physicians, obstetricians, residents, nurses, midwives, paramedics and other health care providers. 

What material does the Provider Course cover?

Specific objectives are included at the beginning of each chapter of the ALSO Provider Course syllabus; however, the following are topics included as part of the ALSO Provider Course curriculum: 

  • First trimester complications
  • Vaginal bleeding in late pregnancy
  • Preterm labour / PROM
  • Labour dystocia
  • Safety in maternity care
  • Medical complications
  • Maternal resuscitation
  • Postpartum hemorrhage

The curriculum includes several workstations that afford participants the opportunity to practice new skills using mannequins and other simulation-type devices. Workstations focus on the following:

  • Intrapartum fetal surveillance
  • Shoulder dystocia assisted delivery
  • Malpresentations
  • OB cases

Upon completion of the course curriculum, participants must successfully complete both the written and megadelivery (hands-on) examinations to receive Provider status.

Do I earn Mainpro credits for attending?

Advanced life support and resuscitation programs eligible for Mainpro-C credits, Mainpro-M1 credits and/or Mainpro-M2 credits.

You can earn 0.5 Mainpro-C credits (and 0.5 bonus Mainpro-M1 credits) per hour of participation upon completing the ALSO Provider Course. During each five-year Mainpro cycle, you can claim up to a maximum of 16 Mainpro-C credits for attending advanced life support provider, recertification, or instructor training. Once the limit has been reached, participation shall be recognized with Mainpro-M1 credit. For details, please click here.

Members of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) are eligible to receive 7.25 Prescribed credit hours for attendance at this meeting due to reciprocal agreement with the CFPC.

ALSO Refresher Course

This one-day refresher course extends or renews your ALSO Provider status for a period of five years.

The ALSO Provider course has been designed to enhance cognitive and procedural skills of health care professionals, allowing them to manage obstetrical emergencies. The Refresher Course has been designed to review and provide updates on the key topics and content from the Provider course.

Participants must have successfully completed the Provider course or a similar advanced life support in obstetrics course previously to enroll in the Refresher Course.

Course content:

Detailed educational objectives are listed at the beginning of each chapter in the ALSO Course syllabus. Several of the topics/scenarios listed below are conducted as hands-on workstations.

  • Introduction and changes to the ALSO curriculum
  • Postpartum hemorrhage update
  • Maternal resuscitation
  • OB cases
  • Shoulder dystocia and breech
  • Assisted vaginal delivery
  • Intrapartum fetal surveillance
  • Safety in maternity care

Upon completion of the course curriculum, participants must successfully complete both the written and megadelivery (hands-on) examinations to receive Provider status.
