This section of the CFPC website contains
information for CFPC members and non-member Mainpro®
participants.
Mainpro-C eligible
activities are divided into two categories:
- CFPC pre-accredited learning activities
- Self-directed learning activities
You must submit proof of
participation for all Mainpro-C activities
to the CFPC for verification purposes (copy of certificate of
completion/participation, university transcript, advanced life support
program wallet card, etc.).
Retain a personal copy of proof of
participation for a minimum period of six (6) years in case you are
selected to participate in CPD credit validation or auditing.

Pre-Accredited
Learning Activities
The individual(s)
and/or organizations planning a learning activity must apply to the CFPC
to have the activity accredited for Mainpro-C credits. Upon completion of
the activity/program, a certificate of completion is issued to the
participant who must then submit the certificate to the CFPC to claim
their Mainpro-C credits.

Conferences, courses and workshops
|
Features of
Mainpro-C accredited activities include:
- A pre-program needs assessment that
focuses on individual participant needs;
- An emphasis on small group
discussions/activities;
- A reflective post-program activity or
exercise.
The pre- and post-program components help
to ensure that knowledge and/or skills are integrated, over time, into
one’s own practice.
- To receive Mainpro-C credits, you must
submit a copy of your proof of participation to the CFPC
- Proof of participation must
include a statement indicating that the program is Mainpro-C accredited

Advanced life support programs |
The
following advanced life support and resuscitation programs are eligible
for Mainpro-C credits* :
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS)
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
- Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO)
- Advances in Labour and Risk Management
(ALARM)
- Managing Obstetrical Risk Efficiently
(MOREob)

- To receive Mainpro-C credits, you must
submit a copy of your proof of participation to the CFPC
- Proof of participation in the
form of a wallet card, certificate or letter of acknowledgement will be

Independent & practice-based small group learning
(PBIL/PBSGL) |
The
Foundation for Medical Practice Education (FMPE) is a Canadian non-profit
organization dedicated to the development, production, and evaluation of
educational programs for community-based family medicine and general
practitioners. The Foundation was developed to administer a successful
innovative educational program initiated at McMaster University in 1992;
it subsequently became a national program in which several Canadian
universities participate. This educational program, called The Practice
Based Small Group (PBSG) Learning Program, was developed as a result of a
pilot project completed in 1986… (click here for a link to

- CFPC members enrolled in PBIL or PBSGL may
claim one (1) Mainpro-C credit per hour of
participation
- To receive Mainpro-C credits, you must
submit a copy of the certificate issued by the FMPE

Organized clinical traineeships and fellowships*
|
Clinical
traineeships and fellowships are planned learning experiences that enhance
or introduce new knowledge and/or skills to your practice. To be eligible
for Mainpro-C credits, the traineeship/fellowship must be a
minimum of five (5) days in duration. Traineeships and
fellowships may be planned for groups of physicians or individual
physicians.
- To receive Mainpro-C credits, you must
complete and submit the Clinical Traineeship and
Fellowship form (click here for link to Mainpro forms)
- You earn 25 Mainpro-C
credits for each completed clinical traineeship or fellowship

Self-Directed Learning
Activities
The activities/exercises
listed below provide you with the opportunity to generate Mainpro-C
credits in a self-directed manner. For each of these activities you must
complete a specific credit submission form to document the process and
claim your Mainpro-C credits.

Family medicine and emergency medicine examinations
|
Family physicians who prepare
for and sit large-scale family medicine or emergency medicine
examinations are eligible to earn Mainpro-C credits. The following
examinations are eligible*:
- Proof of participation must be submitted
along with a completed Family Medicine and Emergency Medicine
Examinations form (click here for a link to all Mainpro credit submission forms)
- Earn twenty-five (25) Mainpro-C
credits for each completed examination
*Other examinations
will be considered on an individual basis *CCFP examination is not
eligible for Mainpro credits.. |

Linking Learning to Practice (LLP)
|
Linking Learning
to Practice (LLP) allows you to earn Mainpro-C credits for a
variety of activities, including:
- Conducting a research project on a topic
relevant to family medicine
- Developing educational materials and/or
clinical practice guidelines
- Committee work that involves the review of
family medicine content
- Academic activities including planning and
conducting teaching activities
- Participating in educational program
accreditation survey visits
- Being an examiner for a family medicine or
emergency medicine examination
- Any many more…
These activities are
treated as stimuli for the generation of practice-related questions and
answers. Questions can be related to any legitimate role of family
physicians – clinical, academic, or administrative. The LLP form guides
you through an inquiry and decision-making process, and then facilitates
the reflective process necessary for earning Mainpro-C credits.
- To claim Mainpro-C credits, you must
complete and submit the Linking Learning to Practice form
(click here for a link to all
Mainpro credit submission forms)
- Earn two (2) Mainpro-C credits
for each completed form
- More than one form may be submitted if each
is based on a distinctly different question

Pearls™ |
Pearls™ is a self-directed evidence-based
practice reflection exercise. As a self-learning activity, Pearls® guides
you through a five step process:
- Formulating a practice-based clinical
question
- Seeking the appropriate information to
answer your questions
- Evaluating the available information
- Making a decision on how to use/incorporate
the information into your practice
- Evaluating the impact of your decision
after a sufficient period of time has elapsed

- Earn three (3) Mainpro-C credits
for each completed Pearls™ exercise submitted.

Practice Audits and Quality Assurance
Programs |
This is in addition to
the Mainpro-M1 credits which can be claimed on an hour-for-hour basis for
participation in practice audits or other quality assurance programs (both
for individual or group-based audits).
- To receive Mainpro-C credits, you must
complete and submit the Practice Audits and Quality Assurance
Programs form (click here for a link to all Mainpro credit submission forms)
- Earn three (3) Mainpro-C credits
for submitted form
- If the assessment and feedback is
comprehensive more than one form may be submitted if each is based on a
distinctly different question

Provincial practice review and enhancement
programs |
Many provinces and regions
conduct organized medical practice review programs. These are most often
sponsored by the provincial licensing authorities and are conducted by the
licensing authority, a medical association or a university.
- To claim Mainpro-C credits, you must
complete and submit the Provincial Practice Review and Enhancement
Program form (click here for a link to all Mainpro credit submission forms)
- Earn three (3) Mainpro-C credits
for each completed form
- If the assessment and feedback is
comprehensive more than one form may be submitted if each is based on a
distinctly different question

Self-planned Clinical Traineeships and
Fellowships |
For self-planned
traineeships, physicians must identify their own learning needs through
practice reflection, practice audit, change of practice focus, or change
in patient demographics. See Organized clinical traineeships and
fellowships above for a more information.
- To receive Mainpro-C credits, you must
complete and submit the Clinical Traineeships and Fellowships
form (click here for a link to all
Mainpro credit submission forms)
- Earn twenty-five (25) Mainpro-C
credits for each self-planned traineeship or fellowship

University degree and diploma programs
|
Any completed university
degree or diploma program that is relevant to the practice of family
medicine, family medicine education, or to improving the health of
patients may be eligible for Mainpro-C credit. For example, graduate
studies in epidemiology or a certificate course in higher
education.
- To claim Mainpro-C credits, you must
complete and submit the University Degree and Diploma Programs
form (click here for a link to all
Mainpro credit submission forms)
- Earn twenty-five (25)
Mainpro-C credits for each completed university degree or
diploma program
