General requirements
All members who are in full or part time practice are required to participate
in Mainpro.
The classes of membership to which this applies are:
* Resident members are not required, but may choose to
submit Mainpro credits during their FM Residency .
The classes of membership that are exempt are:
Credit requirements
Certificant and non-Certificant members are required to submit a total of 250
credits every 5 years. At least 125 of these must be from accredited CME
(Mainpro-M1 and / or Mainpro-C credits). The rest can be from non-accredited CME
(Mainpro-M2 credits).
The 5-year time-frame allows members to work continuously toward completing
their CME requirements. They can plan their own activities by participating in
selected eligible activities at their own timing over the entire 5-year
period.
Mainpro-M1 credits and Mainpro-C credits can be claimed for accredited CME
activities. These are accredited by the CFPC and by other organizations with
which the CFPC has accreditation agreements. Mainpro-M2 credits can be claimed
for unaccredited activities. These three credits serve complementary roles by
recognizing different forms of CME.
Fellowship (FCFP)
Fellowship Eligibility
Established by the CFPC Board of Directors, there are three
criteria used to determine Fellowhship eligibility. Fellowship is awarded to
Certificants who have:
- Held Certification (CCFP) for at least ten (10) consecutive years
with no discontinuations and/or suspensions;
- Successfully completed two (2) consecutive five-year Mainpro®
cycles; and
- Submitted a minimum of 25 Mainpro-C credits in each of the two
consecutive Mainpro® cycles.
* Note: Fulfillment of the above criteria does not guarantee
Fellowship in the College.
Maintenance of Fellowship
Those awarded Fellowship on or after January 1, 2004, must report
250 Mainpro credits in every five-year cycle, of which:
- At least 125 Mainpro-M1 and/or Mainpro-C*
- *At least 25 of the above must be Mainpro-C
- The additional 125 credits may be Mainpro-M2, Mainpro-M1 and/or
Mainpro-C
Those who were awarded Fellowship in The College of Family
Physicians of Canada prior to 2004 must meet the requirements for Maintenance of
Certification (Mainpro-C credits are optional for these individuals).
Timing of the 5-year cycle
The first 5-year cycle began in 1998 for all Active members.
For all those who attained certification or membership in 1999 or later, the
5-year cycle starts the January 1st following attainment of certification
or membership.
Active members who attain certification through the
practice-eligible route will begin a new 5-year cycle the January 1st following
certification. Any credits previously submitted will remain on record but will
not be transferred to the new cycle. They will be given 10 Mainpro-C credits for
their new cycle in recognition of going through the certification process.
Family Medicine Residents and Mainpro
PGY-1 and PGY-2: Individuals enrolled in a
Canadian university family medicine residency program are eligible to
participate in Mainpro. Resident members may earn
Mainpro credits for participating in CME/CPD activities that are not a part of
their mandatory residency training curriculum (course work, projects, etc.).
Upon completion of residency training (PGY-2 or
PGY-3), these individuals will be assigned to a new five-year Active
member cycle and may carry forward, from the residency cycle, a
maximum of 30 Mainpro-M1 and five (5) Mainpro-C credits.
PGY-3: Individuals who opt to transition directly
from a family medicine residency program into a third year
residency in emergency medicine, palliative care, care of the
elderly or other third year program will remain as a Resident
member. These individuals continue to be eligible for the discounted
Resident member fee and may report Mainpro credits as per usual (no restrictions
on the number of credits that may be earned/reported). As per above, once
residency training is complete (PGY-2 or PGY-3), Resident members may carry
forward 30 Mainpro-M1 and five (5) Mainpro-C credits into their
first Active member cycle.
Note: Training courses and projects that are
considered part of a residency program/curriculum are not eligible for
Mainpro credits (these are considered medical education versus
continuing medical education).
NEW! Effective
January 1, 2010, new and existing Resident members of the CFPC must enter
their Mainpro credits online (paper-based submissions will not be accepted).
Entering credits online is quick and efficient! From your home or office, enter
CME/CPD credits as you earn them. Not only can you view your CME/CPD credit
accomplishments whenever you want to, you can also monitor and plan your
professional development with ease.

As always, Mainpro-C category activities can be entered online
but members must email, fax or mail the accompanying certificate or proof of
participation to the CFPC. We do not require proof of participation for
Mainpro-M1 and Mainpro-M2 activities. However, it is important to retain
copies of certificates obtained for all activities in the event of a credit
audit by the CFPC.
Active Members Returning to Residency
Training
Active members who halt their practice to pursue
additional full-time residency training (emergency medicine,
psychiatry, or other) will have their current Mainpro cycle stopped and be
assigned a temporary Resident member cycle (they may continue
to report Mainpro credits as per usual - no restriction on the number of credits
that may be earned/reported). Upon completion of residency training, these
individuals will be assigned to a new five-year Active cycle; they may carry
forward a maximum of 30 Mainpro-M1 and five (5) Mainpro-C credits from their
Resident member cycle to their new Active cycle. These individuals are eligible
for a reduced membership fee only if pursuing full-time residency training
(please contact the membership department for more information).
Note: Training courses and projects that are considered part
of a residency program/curriculum are not eligible for Mainpro credits
(these are considered medical education versus continuing medical
education).
NEW! Effective January 1,
2010, active members returning to residency training must enter their
Mainpro credits online (paper-based submissions will not be accepted).
Active Members Completing Post-Graduate
Didactic or Enhanced Skills Training
Active members who pursue additional post-graduate education (e.g.,
Masters of education, PhD in epidemiology, or other) or participate in enhanced
skills training (e.g., three months training in obstetrics/gynaecology, pain
management or other) will remain Active members and may
continue to report Mainpro credits as per usual (no restriction on the number of
credits that may be earned/reported). Individual consideration for cycle
extension must be made in writing to the CPD Manager (dpatel@cfpc.ca); individual consideration for
membership fees during the additional training must be made in writing to
Membership Manager (jfernandes@cfpc.ca).
Active members who pursue post-graduate education and
enhanced skills training programs may be eligible to earn 25 Mainpro-C
credits upon program completion. Please contact the CPD Department for
more information, or refer to the Mainpro Credits Submission Forms section of
our website at www.cfpc.ca/mainproforms.
Special circumstances
Members holding Certificate of Special Competence in Emergency
Medicine
The requirements for members holding the Certificate of Special
Competence in Emergency Medicine are based on their status as a certificant in
family medicine. Members holding CFPC(EM) or members holding MCFP(EM) must
complete the requirements for Maintenace of Certification / Maintenance of

primary practice is in that specialty. Participation in CME activities approved
for members under Mainpro is not necessary for these members if they participate
actively in the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of
Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. They will, however, be required to submit a
copy of their annual RCPSC credit profile.
Members residing in other countries
Members residing in countries other than Canada and the United
States, may claim credits for their local CME activities provided that:
-
the activities fulfil the CME requirements of a national
college or academy of family physicians in which they are members, or
-
the activities are judged to be equivalent in quality and
standards to those approved through Mainpro.
