Janus Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Scholarship 2010

Supported by Associated Medical Services, Inc., Scotiabank, the Hollister King Endowment Fund and the CFPC Research & Education Foundation

Janus CPD Scholarships support academic and community based family doctors, CFPC members who are in active practice, to carry out CPD or continuing medical education (CME) activities related to meeting the changing needs of their patients and communities within Canada. These scholarships are intended to support programs based on the four principles of family medicine which state:

  1. The family physician must be a skilled clinician.
  2. The doctor-patient relationship is central to the role of the family physician.
  3. Family medicine is a community-based discipline. *
  4. The family physician is a resource to a defined practice population. *
       * of particular importance to the Janus Project.

One of the Janus CPD Scholarships, the Hollister King Rural Family Practice Scholarship, is named in memory of the late Dr. Hollister King, CFPC President (1977 - 1978) and Family Physician Chief of Women’s College Hospital in Toronto in honour of his life-long commitment to rural family practice. 

A variety of CPD/CME activities are eligible for these scholarships, for example:

  • Clinical traineeships
  • Diploma or certificate programs
  • Graduate studies
  • Faculty development initiatives

Value
The value of each scholarship will be up to $4,000. The number and value of scholarships awarded each year will be determined by the funds available.

Recipients of a Janus CPD Scholarship are required to:

  • a) submit a written final report;
    or
  • b) present a summary of their educational experience as a poster presentation at Family Medicine Forum (FMF) in Vancouver, BC, October 14-16, 2010 or at FMF 2011 in Montreal . An additional $1,000 will be available to offset registration, travel and other expenses to attend FMF for poster presentations.

Eligibility
To be eligible for a 2010 scholarship, a program must have started between January 1st, 2009 and December 31st, 2010.  Projects are to benefit communities within Canada. The traineeship is to occur in Canada.  Alternate locations will be considered if the training sought is not available in Canada. Preference will be given to applications that show a direct link between an educational activity to a community need. The Janus CPD Scholarships do not cover the cost for lost income or time away from practice

Deadline
Applications must reach the CFPC national office by March 1st, 2010.

Selection Process
The CFPC National Committee on Continuing Professional Development and the Section of  Teachers' selection committee will recommend the recipients of this award to the national Honours and Awards Committee. Applicants will be notified of results in July 2010.

Janus Scholarship for Global Health Projects 2010

Supported by the Associated Medical Services, Inc., Scotiabank, and
The CFPC Research & Education Foundation

This scholarship is intended to support CFPC members in activities engaging in global health care projects either in Canada or abroad, and in promoting family medicine abroad. Clinical activities, teaching, research or conference attendance will be considered.

Value
One scholarship will be offered at $2,000. The recipient is required to provide a final report following the activity in the form of a written manuscript, journal article or conference abstract.

Eligibility

  • Community based family doctors (CFPC members)
  • Academic based family doctors (CFPC members)
  • Family medicine residents

To be eligible for a 2010 scholarship, the activity must have started between January 1st, 2009 and December 31st, 2010. 

Applications must include & will be rated on: 

  • a description of current practice profile relevant to this application
  • a description of the proposed activity, expected time frame, and anticipated costs
  • reasons for choosing this activity
  • a description of the benefits to the country/community involved
  • a description of the benefits to the Department of Family Medicine and/or to the university as a whole, if applicable
  • a description of how this activity will promote and encourage growth in the discipline of family medicine

Complete applications must reach the CFPC national office by March 19, 2010

Selection Process
The CFPC Global Health Committee will recommend the recipient of this award to the national Honours and Awards Committee.  Applicants will be notified of results in July 2010.

C. Robert Kemp Palliative Care Scholarships 2010

Supported by the Stoney Creek Fund of the Hamilton Community Foundation and
the CFPC Research & Education Foundation


These scholarships are named in memory of Dr. C. Robert Kemp, Ontario College of Family Physicians President (1967-1968) who had an active interest in palliative care.  The scholarships are awarded to family doctors, CFPC members in active practice, to support their participation in continuing professional development /continuing medical education programs planned to help them attain or enhance their knowledge and skills in the areas of hospice palliative care. 

Value
There will be two scholarships of $2,250 each.  Recipients are required to provide a written final report.

Eligibility

An ideal educational plan includes a longitudinal clinical experience and mentorship by experts in hospice/palliative care.  Applicants will be selected on the merit of their educational proposal and the perceived benefit(s) to their community. 

  • The program must have started between January 1st, 2009 and December 31st, 2010 
  • Applicant must be a CFPC member in active family medicine practice 
  • Projects must contain clinical components 
  • Projects should primarily benefit communities within Canada
  • Alternate locations will be considered if the training sought is not available in Canada

Not Eligible

  • Applicants involved in full-time hospice palliative care
  • Applicants in the year of added competency in palliative care training
  • Attendance at palliative care conferences and courses

Applications must reach the CFPC National office by March 19, 2010.

The CFPC’s Palliative Care will recommend the recipients for this award to the national Honours and Awards Committee.  Applicants will be notified of results in July 2010.

CFPC Scholarships in Women’s Health 2010

Funding for these scholarships is provided by the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada’s (SOGC’s) Foundation for Sexual and Reproductive Health and the CFPC Research & Education Foundation

The purpose of these scholarships is to support family physicians, CFPC members in active practice, committed to enhancing their knowledge or skills in women’s health to meet the needs of their community within Canada. Eligible areas include sexual and reproductive health, sexually transmitted diseases, breast health, prevention and screening of gynecological diseases, obstetrics, menopause, etc.

Learning activity
The learning activity is to take the form of a clinical traineeship and mentorship consisting of:

  • an active, individualized, and practical experience related to clearly-defined educational objectives
  • must comprise one or two months of training in total (ie. 20-40 days) which can be done either full time or part time
  •  must commence in 2010 and be completed within 12 months
  • must benefit communities within Canada 
  • should occur in Canada -  alternate locations will be considered if the training sought is not available in Canada 
  • all recipients will be required to provide a written final report

Attendance in courses such as ALARM, ALSO and NRP are not eligible.

Value
Eight scholarships will be awarded at $6,250 each. The applicant will receive $5,250 and $1,000 will be offered to the individual and/or department providing the training. 

Eligibility
CFPC members in active family medicine practice are eligible. Selection of recipients will take into account regional practice locations.

Applications must reach the CFPC National office by March 19, 2010.

Selection Process
The CFPC’s Maternity and Newborn Care Committee will recommend the recipients of this award to the Honours and Awards Committee. Applicants will be notified of results in July 2010.
