| The National Family Physician Workforce Survey (NFPWS) 2001 was the
first cenus survey of all family physicians in Canada. The survey was
launched in an effort to answer many important questions relating to the
delivery of health care services in Canada. At the time, there were
several important physician information databases existing within Canada,
however, there was a void of information, particularly with respect to the role
of the family physician within Canadian health care services. To address
this void, it was necessary to take a closer look at primary care, including
what family doctors themselves could tell about the care they were offering to
their patients. Ultimately, the goal of the 2001 NFPWS was to achieve a
better understanding of what family doctors were doing in their daily practices,
the clinical problems they were dealing with on a regular basis and the types of
medical services they were offering.
