Ian McWhinney Family Medicine Education Award

This award is named in honour memory of Dr Ian McWhinney, the first Professor and Chair of a Canadian University Department of Family Medicine, (Western University, 1968 to 1987).

The award honours excellence in family medicine education and is presented to a teacher of family medicine deemed by his/her peers to have made a unique and innovative contribution which has had a significant national impact on the development of family medicine education in Canada.

This contribution may encompass any level or aspect of family medicine education, such as the following:

  • Continuing medical education
  • Teaching
  • Curriculum development
  • Scholarship
  • Administration, etc.

The recipient will be invited to lead a designated education activity during Family Medicine Education Forum (FMEF) or during Family Medicine Forum (FMF), held in conjunction with Family Medicine Forum (FMF) 2013 in Vancouver, BC, November 7 to 9, 2013. The award will be presented at the Section of Teachers Annual Dinner.

Nomination and selection process

Nominations for the Ian McWhinney Family Medicine Education Award are invited from all members of the CFPC Section of Teachers (SOT). Nomination forms are sent to the Chairs and Program Directors at each University Department of Family Medicine in order to complete this process.

Nominations must reach the CFPC national office by April 1, 2013.

The SOT’s Selection Committee will recommend the recipient of this award to the national Honours and Awards Committee. Nominees will be notified of results in July 2013.
