      CFPC Announcement

      Dr. Calvin Gutkin, Executive Director and CEO of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) is pleased to announce that effective April 1, 2011, the College will officially launch a new Corporate Affairs Department at its National office in Mississauga, Ontario.

        Advisory to Members: CFPC Section fees dropped

        As of January 2011, the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) no longer charges additional fees for members who join the Section of Teachers or the Section of Researchers. This brings these Sections in line with the Section of Residents, Section of Medical Students, and Section of Communities of Practice in Family Medicine, where members have not paid additional fees in the past.

        Remembering Dr. Barbara Starfield

        The news of the sudden death of Professor Barbara Starfield, apparently due to a coronary event while swimming at her California home on Friday, 10 June 2011, came as a shock. Her passing is an irreplaceable loss for those of us in the global community who care deeply about health care and equity.

        Canada’s largest physician survey warns of chronic illness impact on the Health Care System

         New data released today from the 2010 National Physician Survey (NPS) shows that, in spite of improvements in some areas, Canada’s doctors are finding it increasingly challenging to meet the changing health care needs of the ever growing number of Canadians living with chronic and complex medical conditions.

        Advisory to members regarding CCSVI and MS

        The information shared here was provided to the CFPC in January 2011 by the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) and reflects the need for further research on both the possible link between CCSVI and MS and the safety of CCSVI before treatment is offered in Canada. This approach is supported by CIHR, the Canadian Medical Association, The Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada, Collège des médecins du Québec, and the Canadian Society of Vascular Surgery. Physicians with related questions should contact the MS Society of Canada or CIHR. Patients with questions related to this topic should consult their family physician, MS specialist, or the MS Society of Canada.

        Asbestos Letter to the Prime Minister

        On June 14, 2011, the College of Family Physicians of Canada, Canadian Medical Association, and The Canadian National Specialty Society for Community Medicine(NSSCM) wrote to Prime Minister Stephen Harper stating that Canada must eliminate asbestos production and exportation, and encourage economic activity that does not endanger the public’s health.
