Patient Education Grants for Family Medicine Residents

These grants are made possible through the generous donations of Scotiabank and the Foundation for Advancing Family Medicine (FAFM) of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC).

The Patient Education Grants for Family Medicine Residents recognize and encourage family medicine residents to become involved in the planning and development of patient education.  The grants support residents to do projects focused on Choosing Wisely Canada Recommendations during their training (i.e. research, developing learning tools.) and in the creation and promotion of materials, tools and presentations specifically addressing gaps in patient education resources and updating existing information.

Application Process 

A complete proposal must include the following components:

  • The resident has shown strong interest in patient education through their application
  • disclosure of potential conflict of interest
  • program/resource description,
  • objectives,
  • target audience
  • identification of learning opportunity to provide high-quality information for patients and communities

All end products must be peer-reviewed by the Patient Education Committee.
Reporting requirements:

1. Poster Presentation at FMF 2017 or other conference (eg NAPCRG)


2. publication in Prevention in HandWebsite (PiH)

  • full manuscript research projects
  • pamphlet or brochure


3. Publication in Patient Education Website

  • full manuscript for research projects
  • pamphlet or brochure


4. Creation of an online resource

Residents must apply online.

The deadline to apply is June 20, 2017, 4pm EST/EDT.

Please note: Application window opens on December, 9th.

Please note: As part of the application process, posters and Powerpoint submissions will not be accepted.

Selection Process

The CFPC’s Patient Education Committee will recommend the recipients to the national Honours and Awards Committee. Notification of results will be sent by email in July.
