President's Message - December 2016

David White, MD, CCFP, FCFP

Looking to the future at the start of CFPC presidency

As I begin my term as President of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC), I want to thank my fellow family physicians and CFPC members for this tremendous honour.

Beginning the presidential term at Family Medicine Forum (FMF) is a great way to kick off this experience. This year’s conference in Vancouver allowed us to celebrate achievements in family medicine while also sharing research and ideas to advance our field. It was heartening to see family physicians from across the country and from all career stages attending the many sessions, workshops, and consultations at FMF.

Immediately after FMF I attended another conference, the North American Primary Care Research Group meeting in Colorado Springs, Colorado. These two high-calibre events led me to reflect on the importance of research and evidence in our field, and the emerging discussion about enabling family physicians to build research-ready practices. Engaging frontline family physicians in creating the evidence that informs practice is key to the evolution of our discipline.

In the coming year the CFPC will continue to work on updating the Patient’s Medical Home (PMH) concept. This will also be a time for further exploration of how we approach the development of enhanced skills and the provision of continuing, comprehensive, patient-centred care. One of the best parts of being CFPC President is the opportunity to meet with family physicians across Canada to understand variation in primary care provision and how the PMH model is being implemented in different parts of the country. We have a lot to learn from each other, so I am looking forward to meeting with as many of you as possible.

During my presidency I will be marking my 40th year in practice as a family physician. It is an endlessly fascinating career, and as I said in my installation speech at FMF—or rather sang, to the tune of Johnny B. Goode—family docs rock! (You can see a video of my performance on the CFPC’s YouTube channel.)

As 2016 comes to a close and we usher in 2017, I wish you all a happy and healthy new year.
