CFPC Welcomes Dr. Mike Allan as Director, Programs and Practice Support

dr mike allan(June 13, 2018, Mississauga, ON) The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) is pleased to announce that Dr. Michael Allan of Edmonton, Alberta, has accepted the position of Director, Programs and Practice Support (PPS) effective August 1, 2018.

Over the last nine months Dr. Allan has served as a physician consultant with the CFPC, and then as Acting Director of the PPS department with the mandate to provide education programs and practice tools that meet the needs of Canadian family physicians. This portfolio includes the Self Learning program with over 7,000 subscribers, the Prevention in Hand website, and the Section of Communities of Practice in Family Medicine.

Throughout his career Dr. Allan has developed and led a variety of continuing professional development (CPD) and practice support activities. He is a creative, enthusiastic, and accomplished leader whose passion for innovative approaches to medical education and knowledge translation is a great asset to the CFPC.

Dr. Allan is a professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Alberta, and he has worked closely with the Alberta College of Family Physicians (ACFP). In partnership with the ACFP, Dr. Allan has led Tools for Practice, which are regular evidence-based clinical summaries that are featured in Canadian Family Physician and on the ACFP website. He created the Practical Evidence for Informed Practice (PEIP) conferences, and directed the ACFP’s Evidence and Continuing Professional Development program. Dr. Allan has led the Patients, Experience, Evidence, Research (PEER) Team, which offers unique interactive CPD sessions, and developed the influential simplified guidelines by and for family physicians on lipids (2015) and medical use of cannabinoids (2018). He also co-hosts the top-rated Best Science Medicine podcast.
