CFPC Supports Health Care Innovation Report

July 22, 2015

(July 22, 2015, Mississauga, ON) The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) applauds the release of the Report of the Advisory Panel on Healthcare Innovation titled “Unleashing Innovation: Excellent Healthcare for Canada”. Through their work, the Advisory Panel members were able to articulate important insights regarding the Canadian health care system.

“Through previous advocacy work, the CFPC has called for increased federal leadership in health care,” says the CFPC’s Executive Director and CEO, Francine Lemire, MD CM, CCFP, FCFP, CAE. “The recommendations in this latest report underline the importance of such leadership. The CFPC’s 2013 Role of Federal Government in Health Care document highlights many of the same principles.”

“It is especially encouraging to see the focus on the patient-centred experience in this report,” adds CFPC President, Garey Mazowita, MD, CCFP, FCFP.  “With our work on the Patient’s Medical Home, the CFPC offers a model of care that puts patients first and provides comprehensive continuous care responsive to the needs of the communities and delivered by an integrated inter-professional team.”

As the report acknowledges, there are many pockets of innovation in the Canadian health care system. The CFPC is ready to work collaboratively with the federal government as it scales up innovative approaches to ensure that the family medicine perspective is included in future enhancements.

The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) represents more than 34,000 members across the country. It is the professional organization responsible for establishing standards for the training, certification and lifelong education of family physicians. The College provides quality services and programs, supports family medicine teaching and research, and advocates on behalf of family physicians and the specialty of family medicine. The CFPC accredits postgraduate family medicine training in Canada’s 17 medical schools.
