REF Governance Update

August 15, 2016

(August 15, 2016, Mississauga, ON) Some exciting changes are being proposed for the Research and Education Foundation (REF). On May 30, 2016, the REF Board of Directors approved to proceed with a governance restructuring as well as a change to the REF name, and update to the REF mission and vision. Approval of all of these changes will be targeted for September 2016.

REF governance changes

It is proposed that the REF move to a smaller, skills-based Board to provide greater flexibility and enhanced interactivity and engagement with College members, chapters and donors. The Board will be comprised of a minimum of seven directors with a defined mix of skills and competencies to ensure we are governed by a body that remains responsive, credible and accountable to members.

The new REF Board structure is based on an extensive review of best practices, experiences, and evidence gleaned from non-profit boards, discussions and consultations, member support provided at the 2015 Annual Meeting of Members, and the REF leadership. Ongoing evaluation will continue to determine the effectiveness of the new REF Board.

All CFPC members are eligible to be considered for an REF Board Director position. REF Board members will participate throughout the year in Board meetings, the Chapter Symposium, the CFPC’s Annual Forum, and other opportunities to engage with the CFPC Board to support in-depth engagement with all stakeholders.

Update to the REF name, vision and mission

The REF Board is proposing updates to the REF name, vision and mission. These high-level changes are required to better reflect the Foundation’s purpose and role in supporting family medicine through philanthropy, and to raise that profile in all related communications and fundraising initiatives. It is considered strategic and appropriate for the major ‘refresh’ to take place and reposition the Foundation to continue to enhance its growth and success in the years ahead.

All proposed changes will be voted on at an REF members meeting in September 2016. If approved, an official launch will be prepared to take place during Family Medicine Forum in November. We will look forward to sharing these exciting changes with you as details are available!
