The College of Family Physicians of Canada welcomes Steve Slade as Director, Research

(January 17, 2020, Mississauga, ON) The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Steve Slade as Director, Research, in its Academic Family Medicine Division effective February 10, 2020.

“It is a pleasure to welcome Steve to our leadership team,” says the CFPC’s Executive Director and CEO, Francine Lemire, MD CM, CCFP, FCFP, CAE, ICD.D. “As a respected expert in health policy, research, and advocacy, Steve has demonstrated his commitment to enhancing patient outcomes, population health, and societal well-being through better support of medical training and practice. I look forward to adding Steve’s guidance to the CFPC’s important efforts to advance family medicine research.”

Known as an inspirational and collegial leader, Steve has worked with and learned from family medicine researchers across the country. “Steve has a long history of collaborating with the CFPC,” adds Executive Director, Academic Family Medicine, Nancy Fowler, MD, CCFP, FCFP. “In his new role Steve will provide support to the CFPC’s Section of Researchers and continue to engage with clinical, academic, and government stakeholders on behalf of the College. Steve’s appointment will help the College make new strides in our efforts to have more family physicians engage in research and quality improvement activities and to advocate for dedicated federal funding for primary, home, and community health care research.”

In past projects with the CFPC Steve helped launch the National Physician Survey, and he has since contributed to the multi-partner Canada’s Physician Database. He has championed the need for high-quality data in health care workforce planning and led research projects at the Canadian Institute for Health Information.

Steve led and collaborated on innovative research focusing on educational pathways and medical workforce outcomes during his time as director of the Canadian Post-M.D. Education Registry and as vice-president, Data and Analysis, at the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada. Most recently he served as the director of Health Systems and Policy at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. While at the Royal College Steve helped develop new data resources, decision-support tools, and knowledge translation products that illustrate how the medical workforce responds to evolving population health needs, including those of underserved communities and Indigenous peoples.
