alan katzAfter training at the University of Cape Town in South Africa, Dr. Alan Katz immigrated to Canada in 1986 and began practising family medicine in rural Saskatchewan. He received his Certification in the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CCFP) in 1996 and was awarded Fellowship in 1999.

Dr. Katz moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 1988 to work at the Mount Carmel Community Clinic in the socio-economically challenged inner-city core. He also held several hospital appointments with Seven Oaks General Hospital, St. Boniface General Hospital, and Women’s Hospital.

In 1995 Dr. Katz joined the Department of Family Medicine at University of Manitoba. He currently serves as director of the Manitoba Centre for Health Policy and as a professor with the Departments of Family Medicine and Community Health Sciences. Dr. Katz is the principal investigator or co-investigator on projects funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and the International Development Research Centre. His research focuses on health care service delivery models, health reform initiatives, quality of care indicators, and knowledge translation. Dr. Katz continues to work part-time at a community-based teaching clinic in Winnipeg.

Over the course of his career Dr. Katz has been actively involved in the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC). He served as President of the Manitoba College of Family Physicians from 1996 to 1997. He was Chair of the CFPC’s Section of Researchers from 2012 to 2015 and he is currently a member of the Triple C Program Evaluation Advisory Group. The CFPC recognized Dr. Katz for his outstanding contributions to primary care research with an Award of Excellence in 2016.
