Dr. James Rourke receives the 2017 Calvin L. Gutkin Family Medicine Ambassador Award

james rourke(November 7, 2017, Mississauga, ON) - The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) and the Foundation for Advancing Family Medicine (FAFM) are pleased to announce Dr. James Rourke of St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, as the recipient of the 2017 Calvin L. Gutkin Family Medicine Ambassador Award.

Rural medicine, education, and teaching have been lifelong passions for Dr. Rourke. He spent 25 years of his career in Goderich, Ontario, practising rural family medicine alongside his wife, Dr. Leslie Rourke. Their practice was one of the primary rural family medicine teaching sites for Western University in London, Ontario. In 1997 Dr. Rourke became the founding director of the Southwestern Ontario Rural Medicine Education, Research and Development Unit with Western University’s Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, and from 2002 to 2004 he was the Assistant Dean of Rural Regional Medicine. He then served as the Dean of Medicine at Memorial University of Newfoundland from 2004 to 2016 and as chair of the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada from 2009 to 2011 and of the Canadian Medical Forum from 2011 to 2016.

Dr. James Rourke is well known both nationally and internationally for his leadership in developing rural medical education. Drs. Leslie and James Rourke are widely recognized as co-authors of the Rourke Baby Record—a knowledge translation tool that guides family physicians and other health care professionals in the well-child care of infants and children from birth to five years of age using evidence-based information.

Over the span of his distinguished career Dr. Rourke has received many honours and awards, including the CFPC’s Donald I. Rice Award in 2000, and the W. Victor Johnston Oration in 2007.

Dr. Rourke has had a significant impact on the discipline of family medicine as a practitioner, medical educator, researcher, and health care leader. His contributions serve as an inspiration to his peers and colleagues. Dr. Rourke will be honoured at the annual Awards Gala on Friday, November 10th, in Montreal, Quebec.

The Calvin L. Gutkin award recognizes a dynamic leader in Canadian family medicine distinguished for their vision, innovation, and relationship building with organizations that support and positively influence the ever-changing role of the family physician. The award is named in honour of Dr. Calvin Gutkin, who served as the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the CFPC from 1999 to 2012.
