john maxtedA medical graduate of the University of Ottawa, Dr. John Maxted earned his Certification in the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CCFP) in 1976 and became a Fellow in 2004. In 1995, Dr. Maxted received his Masters in Business Administration from the University of Toronto (U of T).

Dr. Maxted practises comprehensive family medicine and is involved in teaching and administration at the Health for All Family Health Team / Markham Family Medicine Teaching Unit which he helped found in 2010, at Markham-Stouffville Hospital. Since January 2018 he has been Interim Chief of the hospital’s Department of Family Medicine and Academic Chief of the Markham Family Medicine Teaching Unit.

In 2017 Dr. Maxted was promoted to Associate Professor of Medicine in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at U of T.

Dr. Maxted has served in many leadership roles throughout his career. From 2002 to 2010, he was Director, and subsequently, Associate Executive Director of Health Policy and Public Policy at the CFPC. He served as Vice President of Professional Affairs with Comcare Health Services in London and as Chief of Medical Staff at Grand River Hospital in Kitchener, and subsequently appointed to a six-month role as Acting Chief Executive Officer in 1998. With recognized expertise in significant event analysis, he has become a family physician leader and advocate for patient safety.

Dr. Maxted is a former Board Director of the Canadian Public Health Association, the Chatham Public General Hospital, and the Grand River Hospital. He is currently a Board Member for Health Standards Organization. From 2010 to 2017 Dr. Maxted served as Board Chair of the Health for All Family Health Team and was reappointed as Board Director in 2018.

In 2012, Dr. Maxted received an Award of Excellence from the CFPC and the Bright Lights Award from the Association of Family Health Teams of Ontario. He was the recipient of U of T’s Innovation in Education Award in 2014, the Excellence in Teaching Award in 2015, and the Quality Improvement Program Founder’s Award in 2016.
