Mental health tools for family physicians in a post-COVID-19 world

    Besrour

The Besrour Centre for Global Family Medicine (Besrour Centre) at the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) launched a series of FM Pivot learning modules on mental health for family physicians. Building on the experience and knowledge gained by the global family medicine community during the COVID-19 pandemic, learners will be able to:

    1. Describe the mental health impacts of global crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, both on their patients and the provision of primary care
    2. Apply brief evidence-based psychological interventions such as BATHE, brief CBT, and behavioural activation consultations with patients with common mental health concerns in the context of primary care
The module learning activities are primarily asynchronous. Learners will receive a certificate upon module completion. Complimentary registration is available via one of the links below:

The presenters collaborated on the following articles dedicated to this event’s topic:

  • (September 22, 2022) Review the latest CFP teaching articles on reflective assessment and preventive care, and nominate a colleague for new Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada awards.

How to CRAFT an Effective Preceptor-Learner Relationship

The latest Teaching Moment in Canadian Family Physician (CFP) titled ‘How to CRAFT an effective preceptor-learner relationship’ delves into how the assessment objectives provide useful, practical language to help clinical teachers and residents work together. The Fundamental Teaching Activities in Family Medicine provides a description of the clinical coaching skills needed to develop and enhance a resident’s clinical skills and professional development and model the reflective processes found in the Continuous Reflective Assessment for Training (CRAFT). Skillful coaching and assessment are also critical to providing quality assessment information for “higher-stakes” progress decisions. Use these readily available tools to support your coaching in the workplace and to provide what residents both need and want.

We always encourage Teaching Moment article submissions for consideration. To find out more, please email [email protected].

What Should Educators Teach to Improve Preventative Health Care?

In the CFP article ‘What Should Educators Teach to Improve Preventative Health Care?’ the focus is on what concepts to teach in preventive health care. Many flawed assumptions or beliefs persist about the value of preventive health care interventions.

This is a complex topic that requires critical thinking beyond the algorithms often taught when providing care to patients. Learners benefit from educational interventions designed to improve the delivery of preventive health care as it is essential to promote critical thinking to improve learning outcomes and clinical decision making.

The Prevention in Practice series of articles in CFP is a resource for educators who want guidance on what to teach medical students or residents. Key questions and learning objectives can be developed for themes arising from this series of articles.

    Section of Teachers Council

The Section of Teachers Council (SOTC) is seeking a dynamic leader to be its next Chair Elect. This is an outstanding national leadership opportunity during an exciting time of change in family medicine education. Engage with our broad membership to inform educational transformation and be the voice of teachers, preceptors, and educational leaders. Ask us for a full list of roles and responsibilities. Transitional mentoring from the Past Chair will be available to support the Chair Elect.

The Council is dedicated to advancing family medicine education by supporting and engaging family medicine teachers, preceptors, and educational leaders. This ensures community-adaptive family physicians serving health care needs in Canada through lifelong learning. It also ensures links between family medicine undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing professional development activities, and it provides guidance for educational initiatives to support the transition to independent practice including clinical, teaching, and research competencies.

The FDEC strives to develop and support faculty development for teachers involved in delivering family medicine education across the education continuum.

    Postgraduate Education Committee

The Postgraduate Education Committee (PGEC) is seeking individuals with a mix of senior and junior family medicine education experience levels who wish to contribute, through the work of the PGEC, to the future of family medicine postgraduate education in Canada.

    • Assessment director
    • Francophone
    • Anti-oppression/anti-racism teaching

The recent publication of the CFPC’s Outcome of Training Project report makes this a particularly exciting and important time to become part of this committee.

The Section of Teachers community helps to bring together preceptors, teachers, and educational leaders from across Canada to share, collaborate, and support one another. We encourage you to join this community each year, which is as simple as checking off your interest in the SOT in your CFPC membership portal.
