CCFP 50th Anniversary
2019 was a significant year for family medicine in Canada. It marks the 50th year of the Certification in the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CCFP) Special Designation and the Certification Examination in Family Medicine.
The CCFP and Certification Examination were launched in 1969 to bring a rigorous assessment of the skills and knowledge required for effective patient care in family medicine. Just 12 candidates completed the first exam and earned the CCFP designation.
Today on average 1,700 family medicine residents earn their CCFP designation every year, which ensures they have the broad scope of skills necessary to care for patients across Canada. This care includes all clinical domains, both acute and chronic, and all stages, in a variety of care settings, from preventive to palliative care.
The CCFP is awarded to family physicians who have successfully completed both their CFPC accredited residency training and the College’s Certification Examination in Family Medicine, or an approved equivalent. It is a recognized mark of excellence in family medicine. It lets peers and patients know a family doctor has met the highest standards of training and is committed to lifelong learning.
