2024 CFPC Advocacy Day: Parliament Hill meetings on actionable solutions for family medicine

2024-10-31

On October 22nd, representatives from the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) met on Parliament Hill with Ministers, members of Parliament, and Senators to discuss important challenges in family medicine across the country. With six million Canadians currently without a regular family doctor, the CFPC highlighted the pressing need for action, citing evidence that unattached patients face worse health outcomes and turn to costly options like emergency departments.

Led by Dr. Michael Allan (Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer), Dr. Michael Green (President), Dr. Christie Newton (Past President), and Dr. Carrie Bernard (President-Elect), the CFPC presented clear, actionable solutions to alleviate the pressures facing family physicians and improve patient care. These solutions include:
  • Reducing paperwork by removing the requirement for family physicians to fill out the Canada Revenue Agency’s Disability Tax Credit form
  • Directing Employment and Social Development Canada to delay federal medical student loan repayment status until after residency training to lift the financial burden
  • Funding CFPC efforts to streamline foreign credential recognition of internationally educated family physicians to bolster the health workforce
  • Supporting provincial initiatives toward fair and equitable family physician remuneration
On behalf of family doctors, the CFPC’s leadership team spoke with 18 Federal MPs and Senators across political parties, including Minister of Health Mark Holland, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health Yasir Naqvi, and Conservative shadow health minister Dr. Stephen Ellis. In addition, the CFPC met with representatives from the Canada Revenue Agency to discuss changes to the Disability Tax Credit form.

Building on this event, the CFPC will continue advocating to parliamentarians and other federal government partners to support family physicians and address health care challenges across Canada.
