The CFPC recognizes the unprecedented impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, including disruption to our examinations. We continue to approach these issues bearing in mind the need to make decisions informed by the available evidence, and balancing the need to protect the health and safety of all stakeholders, maintaining the CFPC’s high certification standards, and being responsive to its members. As a result, the CFPC has reviewed and revised the eligibility criteria for the fall 2020 certification of added competence in emergency medicine examination (CCFP-EM).

As previously announced, due to limitations caused by the pandemic, the CFPC is only able to offer the written component of the CCFP-EM examination this year. Candidates who took CCFP-EM examination for the first time in 2019 and passed the oral component but failed the SAMP component during that exam, may, as of now, register for the 2020 CCFP-EM examination and will be granted the CCFP-EM designation if successful. An email containing the link for the registration page for this special revised eligibility will be sent to this candidate group. Registration of any newly eligible candidate must occur by no later than August 6, 2020. There will be no exceptions to this registration deadline.

Taking the CCFP-EM examination this year is not a requirement, and individuals choosing to register should carefully consider their readiness for the examination. The CFPC intends to resume administering its examinations as usual (including all oral and written components) in 2021. Candidates who are not successful on the 2020 CCFP-EM Examination, or who choose not to take the examination this year, must complete the full examination (i.e. both written and oral components) at their next sitting.
