New CPD standard for providers takes effect in 2018

December 2017

The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC), the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and the Collège des médecins du Québec have jointly released a national standard for the development and delivery of accredited continuing professional development (CPD) activities for physicians in Canada.

Effective January 2018, the National Standard for Support of Accredited CPD Activities describes a set of ethical standards and expectations relating to sponsorship support that physician learning activities must meet in order to be accredited. The standard is guided by the following four principles: trust, transparency, accountability, and fairness.

New requirements include robust conflict of interest disclosures and strict scientific planning committee participation requirements. Under the new standard CPD provider organizations cannot be a commercial interest or a representative of a commercial interest. This includes, but is not limited to, pharmaceutical companies, medical device companies, and other for-profit organizations, as well as communications or marketing companies employed by for-profit or commercial interests.
