Section of Medical Students

The Section of Medical Students (SOMS) Council is a national committee of medical students established to be the voice of the student members of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) and to link the College with medical students in each university across Canada. Representatives on the SOMS Council are two Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) representatives from each Canadian medical school.

Purpose

The Section of Medical Students Council is a national committee of medical students established to be the voice of the student members of the Section of Medical Students (SOMS) within the CFPC.    

Responsibilities

  1. to be the voice of medical students within CFPC.
  2. to share perspectives of medical students from each school about family medicine as a career.
  3. to share feedback and plan activities related to Family Medicine Interest Groups (FMIGs) at each school:
  4. a) to develop strategies to encourage and foster interaction among medical students interested in a career in family medicine.
    b) to recommend or develop ideas, programs, products to enhance the image of family medicine as a career of first choice among medical students.
  5. to obtain and share feedback from medical students regarding family medicine education at the undergraduate level.

Type of Committee

The SOMS Council is a national standing committee of the CFPC Board of Directors.

Meetings

Two face-to-face meetings of the SOMS Council are held each year - one at and during Family Medicine Forum (FMF), the other at the national CFPC office in Mississauga .

Committee Membership

Two members, one first-year and one second-year student, are elected from each medical school’s Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG). This committee is chaired by two medical student representatives that act as co-chairs.

Observers

Non-voting representation includes seats from the following committees, organizations, medical schools, and associations on the SOMS:

  • Section of Residents (one seat)
  • Faculty Member from a Canadian medical school (one seat)
  • CFPC Chapter Representative (one seat)

The current elected Co-Chairs of the SOMS are Ms. Yang Guo (McGill) and Mr. Wilfrid Chan (University of Manitoba).
