The CFPC supports strengthening Canada’s universal health care system, prioritizes role of family doctors

2025-01-13

The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) supports a single-payer, publicly funded health care system offering universal access to essential medical services while streamlining costs and reducing administrative burdens. The Canada Health Act Interpretation letter by Minister of Health Mark Holland addresses out-of-pocket costs for access to medically necessary care.

While the statement addresses equivalency of some tasks performed by regulated health professionals, it is crucial to recognize and preserve the unique foundational role of family doctors. Family doctors often have 10 or more years of post-secondary education and have advanced training in the diagnosis of undifferentiated illness and management of complex medical conditions. They contribute indispensable comprehensive medical care to their patients over a lifetime and are consistently associated with the best health outcomes across health care. Family doctors provide over half of all medical services  across primary care clinics, hospitals, long-term care settings, and patients’ homes.

A team-based approach continues to be foundationally important—with health professionals working together, patients, providers, and the health care system all stand to benefit. Every team should be led through the medical expertise of a family doctor to maintain high-quality, patient-centred health care in Canada.

Family doctors are specialists in family medicine and experts in primary care.

The CFPC looks forward to working with stakeholders to make sure that the forthcoming funding rules augment universal single-payer health care and enhance, rather than diminish, the critical role of family doctors.
