Data, Analytics, Research, and Evaluation – Family Medicine (DARE-FM)
About Us
Data, Analytics, Research and Evaluation – Family Medicine (DARE-FM) is a hub for comprehensive family medicine data and insights. It is a centralized resource for information about family physicians, their education and training, and their practices, and it aims to address gaps in understanding how family physicians serve patients and communities. DARE-FM transforms data into insights that support inquiry, inform decision making, and enable evidence-based applications across education, research, advocacy, and health system planning.Data – Collect original data and collate family medicine–specific data from broader sources
Analytics – Identify trends, gaps, and patterns to generate insights for family medicine
Research – Promote and support the use of family medicine data and research by leaders and decision makers
Evaluation – Support continuous quality improvement across family medicine education, training, practice, policy, and health systems

Family Medicine Longitudinal Survey (FMLS)
A collaborative effort between Canadian family medicine residency programs and the CFPC to evaluate the Triple C Competency based curriculum. The FMLS is a longitudinal survey administered to family medicine residents and early career family physicians at three time points annually: Time 1 (entry into residency); Time 2 (exit from residency); Time 3 (three years into practice).
- Demographics of family medicine residents
- Family medicine learning experiences
- Perspectives about family medicine as a discipline
- Practice intentions by graduates and choices made in early practice

Data Sources
DARE-FM combines data from original and external sources to support a comprehensive understanding of family medicine, focusing exclusively on family medicine data within broader datasets.
- The CFPC’s Family Medicine Longitudinal Survey (FMLS): The FMLS follows family medicine residents and early career family physicians in Canada at three time points: entry into residency, exit from residency, and three years into practice. It gathers information on demographics, learning experiences, practice intentions and choices, and perceptions of the discipline.
- Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) physician data: The National Physician Database (NPDB) offers pan-Canadian medical service data based on physicians’ fee-for-service billings. Data tables from CIHI’s Supply, Distribution and Migration of Physicians in Canada report give a picture of the number, mix, and distribution of physicians.
- Commonwealth Fund’s International Health Policy Surveys: Administered by CIHI in Canada, the Commonwealth Fund surveys cover patients and providers in several developed countries. Published data tables show how primary care varies across Canada and how Canada compares with other Commonwealth countries.
- Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS): CaRMS’ R-1 data and reports provide information on residency program quota, medical students’ discipline choices, and match results, including filled and unfilled positions. CaRMS also publishes data related to the Family Medicine/Enhanced Skills match.
- Canadian Post-MD Education Registry (CAPER): CAPER’s Census Data Tables provide data on the number, mix, and distribution of post-MD trainees in Canada, including practice location following training and time series trends.
- Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC): Through its Graduation Questionnaire National Report, the AFMC publishes data on undergraduate medical students’ learning experiences across disciplines. The AFMC’s Canadian Medical Education Statistics report provides data on faculty numbers and research revenues.
