The Professional Learning Plan: Enhancing continuing professional development for family physicians

2022-02-28

(Mississauga, ON) The College of Family Physicians of Canada™ (CFPC) is pleased to announce the introduction of a new certified, bilingual online tool to support the continuing professional development (CPD) of family physicians: The Professional Learning Plan (PLP). The PLP will support family physicians in achieving personalized learning goals and building CPD plans that are well-tuned to their practices and to the needs of their patients and communities. Participation in developing a PLP is a voluntary opportunity.

The PLP aligns with other directions within the broader health system. This includes the influential Future of Medical Education in Canada (FMEC) CPD report of 2019 and the increasing interest on the part of medical regulatory authorities in supporting practice improvement through strengthening the connection between CPD choices and scope of medical practice and data arising from their practice. The PLP also fits with the intention of educators in family medicine residency programs to improve the transition between training and practice by planning for continued learning in the early years after certification in family medicine.

“The PLP gives family doctors a new online tool that is enjoyable to use, certified for Mainpro+ Assessment credits, and which will help them make a solid plan for their CPD learning for the year or two ahead,” says Dr. Jeff Sisler, the Executive Director of Professional Development and Practice Support at the CFPC. “It will help them do this with an eye on the full scope of their activities as a physician, and on the learning needs that emerge from data about their medical practice and from reflection on the needs of their community.”

The tool is available in English and French, and can be accessed through the Mainpro+® portal.

More information about the PLP, including frequently asked questions, can be accessed on the CFPC website.
