Practising Well

Medical Fitness to Drive: When & How To Report

June 24, 2026, 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. (ET) – Register

Under Section 203 of the Highway Traffic Act, physicians have mandatory reporting requirements for high risk medical conditions, visual impairments, and functional impairments that make it dangerous for a person to drive. These decisions are mandated and can cause a great deal of stress for both the patient and the physician and can challenge their therapeutic relationship. We’ll explore how to have these conversations with skill, involve the right supports, and preserve, or even strengthen, the physician-patient relationship.

BCCFP marks Family Doctor Month with recognition and advocacy

BCCFP marks Family Doctor Month with recognition and advocacy

Throughout May, the BC College of Family Physicians expanded Family Doctor Day into a month-long celebration honouring the contributions of family physicians across the province.

Family doctors provide essential, continuous care that shapes the health of patients, families, and communities across generations. In recognition of everything you do, the BCCFP brought together a range of events and initiatives this month:

May 8 – BCCFP Awards Celebration: The family medicine community gathered to celebrate our 2026 award recipients, including BC Family Physician of the Year and the patient-nominated My Family Doctor Award honourees. We were delighted to welcome Member of Parliament for Vancouver Centre, Dr. Hedy Fry, Parliamentary Secretary for Primary Care Access, MLA Stephanie Higginson, and CFPC President, Dr. Sarah Cook, as special guests for a memorable evening.

May 19 – BC Family Doctor Day at the BC Legislature: For the ninth consecutive year, the BC Government officially proclaimed May 19th as BC Family Doctor Day, a meaningful recognition of the vital role family physicians play in community health. To mark the occasion, our leadership team met with decision makers at the BC Legislature to advocate for targeted health care investments that strengthen family medicine and improve patient outcomes province-wide.

BCCFP’s 2026 Member Survey results are here

This year, 416 BC family physicians shared their experiences with us, and their voices are clear: the challenges facing family medicine are real, urgent, and require systemic action.

From administrative burden and EMR fragmentation to team-based care barriers and rural retention, the 2026 BCCFP Member Survey captures what’s working, what isn’t, and what needs to change. These findings helped us shape the advocacy priorities we brought to the BC Legislature during Family Doctor Month.
