As we approach World Family Doctor Day on May 19th, the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) recognizes the hard work of family doctors across the country and strives to support you in ways that are felt in your day-to-day practice.

In the Spring Economic Update, the federal government announced changes to streamline the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) process in response to the CFPC advocacy for a simplified process.

  • Permanent or long-duration disabilities will no longer need ongoing re-certification, reducing administrative burden
  • More health professionals are now authorized to certify the DTC forms, improving access and easing pressure on family doctors

We are encouraged that these changes are being implemented and will continue our advocacy to reduce the burden of paperwork on family doctors.

AI scribes can reclaim up to an hour a day for family doctors by eliminating routine note-taking. These tools shouldn’t add to practice overhead costs—they should be fully and permanently funded. The CFPC urges the federal government to take on this cost and fulfil their election pledge to reduce administrative burden.

If you agree with this, please take a moment to use the CFPC letter-writing tool to send a prepared letter to your elected leader—together, we can make a real difference in securing this funding.

Family doctors bring unique foundational value to the health care system. Using blanket terms like “primary care provider” erases the in-depth expertise and training of a family physician.

The CFPC called out the importance of using the appropriate term “family physician” by health policy planners and will continue highlighting the distinct, irreplaceable contributions of our members to Canadian health care.
