Fellowship in the College of Family Physicians (FCFP)

The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) awards the Fellowship in the College of Family Physicians of Canada (FCFP) to members who maintain Certification (CCFP) for at least 10 years and demonstrate outstanding contributions to their communities, colleagues, and the discipline of family medicine. Fellowship is granted annually through a nomination process supported by peer reviewers who are existing Fellows.

Join the Fellowship Council

All CFPC members holding an active FCFP designation, including retired or international members, are invited to join the voluntary, virtual Fellowship Council. Council members may participate in the annual Fellowship review process via one or more of the following committees:
  • Nomination Committee: Reviews a limited number of submissions each year to determine eligibility
  • Adjudication Committee: Reviews applications and Nomination Committee decisions when consensus is not reached
  • Appeals Committee: Assesses applications resubmitted under the appeals process

Participation includes voluntary advisory and networking opportunities. Time commitment is up to two hours between April and July; reviews are online, with video calls only for appeals. This volunteer activity qualifies for Mainpro+® non-certified CPD credits. Interested Fellows may join by submitting the Fellowship Council opt-in form and directing questions to [email protected]. For more information, visit the Fellowship Nomination Assessment Committees page. Committee member identities remain confidential to ensure a thorough, candid review process.

Review process

Each nomination is reviewed by three committee members. If the nominee is:
  • Unanimously successful: The nomination proceeds to Chapter and CFPC executive review, and the nominee will receive their FCFP at FMF convocation
  • Unanimously unsuccessful: The nominee is notified, receives reviewer comments, and may appeal the decision
  • Not unanimous: The Adjudication Committee reviews the file and decides the outcome. If unsuccessful, the nominee can appeal.

Appeals process

Unsuccessful nominees may submit an appeal with additional documentation through the online system. Appeals are reviewed by the Fellowship Appeals Committee and the decision is final. Nominees may reapply during the next cycle.
