Public Health Experts Discuss their COVID-19 Experiences at Family Medicine Forum

(Mississauga, ON) Join the College of Family Physicians (CFPC) at Family Medicine Forum (FMF), Canada’s premier family medicine conference, on Saturday, November 13th, at 9:55 a.m. (ET), when we welcome five senior public health experts from across Canada for a panel discussion and live Q&A. They will present their provincial and territorial experiences with the COVID-19 pandemic including roadblocks encountered, achievements made, and strategies for the future.

The panelists are:
Dr. Janice Fitzgerald, Chief Medical Officer of Health, Newfoundland and Labrador
Dr. Fitzgerald is a key spokesperson on the COVID-19 pandemic including the vaccine delivery and rollout in Newfoundland and Labrador, and public health practices. She has provided public health guidance to lead the province during the COVID-19 pandemic.





Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Chief Medical Officer of Health, Alberta
Dr. Hinshaw has served as Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health since 2019. Prior to this, she served as Alberta Health’s Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Health and as the Medical Officer of Health lead in the area of public health surveillance and infrastructure for Alberta Health Services.



 
Dr. Kami Kandola, Chief Public Health Officer, Northwest Territories
Dr. Kandola has played a pivotal role throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and has overseen the territory’s response to the disease. The Northwest Territories is now experiencing their first wave of a delta variant outbreak in combination with spread in under-vaccinated populations and waning immunity.


 
 
Dr. Jennifer Russell, Chief Medical Officer of Health, New Brunswick
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Russell has been meeting regularly with chief medical officers of health across Canada to assess evolving evidence and guidance. She is proud of how the residents of New Brunswick have managed to flatten the curve across the province.



 
Dr. David Williams, former chief medical officer of health, Ontario
Dr. Williams helped guide government policy since the onset of the pandemic in early 2020 until his retirement in June 2021. Dr. Williams took a lead role in Ontario’s vaccine rollout and helped make Ontario a national leader in testing and contact management.






Discussion will include:

• Key challenges and dilemmas encountered by each represented province and territory
• Highlights about the impact of the pandemic on various health care systems, vulnerable patient groups, and demands on critical care resources
• Strategies to best serve patients and health care providers in future
