Dr. Avik Nath received his medical degree from the University of Ottawa in 2004. He was awarded Certification in the College of Family Physicians of Canada in 2006, followed by a Certificate of Added Competence in Emergency Medicine in 2007. In recognition of his contributions to family medicine, he was awarded Fellowship in the College of Family Physicians of Canada in 2019.
Dr. Nath is a family physician with a focused practice in emergency medicine. Through his work in emergency departments, he has witnessed first-hand the systemic gaps in health care—particularly barriers to accessing primary care—and the disproportionate impact these gaps have on vulnerable populations.
Based in Ottawa, Dr. Nath is a mid-career practising physician with experience in both tertiary and community settings across Ontario. He currently serves as Vice-Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education at the University of Ottawa, Chair of the Ottawa Hospital Emergency Physician Associates, and is an associate professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa. He is the CFPC’s Family Physician Emergency Medicine representative on the Specialty Committee in Emergency Medicine at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and is a former Program Director of the CCFP – DEM Program at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Nath is known for his collaborative leadership style and his ability to build consensus and implement meaningful change.
Dr. Nath has received numerous awards recognizing his contributions to medical education. These include the 2026 Canadian Association of Medical Education (CAME) Certificate of Merit Award, which honours senior faculty who have made exceptional contributions to medical education over their academic careers, and the 2022 Department of Family Medicine Mentorship Award at the University of Ottawa. He has also received multiple teaching awards from the Department of Emergency Medicine.
He has recognized expertise in residency accreditation, serving as a member of the CFPC Residency Accreditation Committee and participating in numerous external accreditation reviews. Dr. Nath is a speaker at national conferences and workshops and has over 17 years of experience in medical education and physician leadership.
Dr. Nath lives in Ottawa with his wife and daughter.
