Alaa Baiou

Alaa Baiou, North Battleford, Saskatchewan, is proposed as a contested nominee with the following attributes:
- Provides care rurally and within Indigenous communities as a hospitalist in emergency medicine, and in office-based practice.
- International medical graduate (IMG).
- CFPC involvement as accreditation volunteer – Resident surveyor for the University of Ottawa's Family Medicine and Enhanced Skills programs; a member of the CFPC Saskatchewan Chapter’s First Five Years in Family Practice (FFYFP) Committee.
- Board experience with Resident Doctors of Saskatchewan, committee experience with the Society of Rural Physicians of Canada’s Resident Resource & Advocacy Committee (co-lead).
- Faculty at the Department of Family Medicine, University of Saskatchewan.
- In the second year of practice as of the 2025 Board election.
Dr. Alaa Baiou is a comprehensive family physician practising in Lloydminster, a border city serving rural and Indigenous communities on Treaty 6 territory in Saskatchewan and Alberta. Her broad scope of practice includes office-based care, emergency medicine, and hospitalist roles. She completed her residency training through the University of Saskatchewan’s Family Medicine Program and earned her Certification in the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CCFP) in 2024.
Dr. Baiou’s leadership experience includes serving as a Board member for Resident Doctors of Saskatchewan and co-leading the Society of Rural Physicians of Canada’s Resident Resource and Advocacy Committee. She has also contributed to CFPC residency accreditation through her role as a resident surveyor.
She continues to contribute to medical education as an assistant professor with the University of Saskatchewan’s Department of Family Medicine, teaching both medical students and residents. In addition, she serves as a member of the Saskatchewan Chapter’s First Five Years in Family Practice (FFYFP) Committee.
Her contributions have been recognized with the Saskatchewan College of Family Physicians Resident Leadership Award (2024) and the CanMEDS Leader Award from the University of Saskatchewan’s Postgraduate Medical Education program (2023).
As an international medical graduate who completed residency in Canada, Dr. Baiou understands the challenges and strengths that international graduates bring to the health system. She values diverse perspectives and is committed to building bridges between early-career physicians and the broader family medicine community.
Dr. Baiou is passionate about advancing equitable access to care, enhancing training for family physicians, and informing policies that reflect the realities of practice for both patients and physicians. Her perspective is grounded in direct, on-the-ground experience working with underserved populations. She values inclusive, collaborative leadership and is dedicated to practical, forward-thinking solutions. She also champions physician wellness and a sustainable work-life balance, recognizing that when physicians are well supported, the quality of care and health of communities improve.
Outside of medicine, she enjoys being in nature, painting, learning new languages, and spending time with her family.
Dr. Baiou is honoured to contribute to the CFPC’s mission of advancing family medicine and supporting both physicians and the communities they serve across Canada.
