Strengthening today. Shaping the future of family medicine.

Family Medicine Forward is the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC)’s strategic planning initiative, shaping a bold long-term direction through November 2026. At a time of significant change in health care, the results of this initiative will make sure the CFPC remains relevant, responsive, and focused on what matters most: championing family physician excellence and strengthening family medicine across Canada.

Alongside this work, the CFPC continues to advance board-approved short-term priorities (2024 to 2027), focused on stabilizing the organization.

What We’re Building

Family Medicine Forward will define the CFPC’s longer-term direction and make sure we are well positioned to meet the evolving needs of family physicians and the health care system.

The plan will:
  • Set a clear, future-focused vision for family medicine in Canada
  • Strengthen how we support physicians throughout their careers
  • Enhance our role as a national leader in family medicine
  • Make sure our work reflects the realities and priorities of members

This work builds on previous CFPC strategic plans while renewing our commitment to excellence.

How We’re Building It

Working with an external consultant, Family Medicine Forward is being shaped through a comprehensive and inclusive process.

Key elements include:
  • Member and partner consultations, including surveys, focus groups, meetings, and targeted sessions
  • Ongoing feedback opportunities, allowing input at any stage of the process
  • Environmental scanning to understand emerging trends and system needs

This approach makes sure the plan is informed by diverse perspectives and grounded in real-world experience.
