The CFPC Board's latest update on the 2023 AMM decisions
Dear Members,
At the 2023 Annual Meeting of Members (AMM) you requested more transparency and clear, proactive communication on how the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) is affecting the future of family medicine. Following reflection and consideration of the member-proposed motions from the November 1st meeting, we have the following updates to provide:
Enhancing transparency and communication
The Board is committed to open dialogue with members, and we will be communicating more frequently. Look out for the new Info Digest column Mike Drop and for the President and CEO messages in Canadian Family Physician that will include updates on the Board’s work. CEO key performance indicators are being shared for the first time, and you will receive summaries following our Board meetings.
Reach out with your questions and let us know what you want to hear more about.
What is happening with the length of training?
Following the member motions at the 2023 AMM, we ceased plans for implementation of a mandated third year of family medicine residency training. Further analysis of past support for training extension is now unnecessary. Instead, the CFPC is working with educators, universities, and partners to develop an education action plan, and providing support to university departments of family medicine in their approaches in adopting the Residency Training Profile (RTP).
Please get in touch if you have questions about training and/or educational standards.
Follow-up on financial reporting questions
The CFPC family medicine certification exam historically has been subsidized by membership revenue. The CFPC’s exam fee formula is being tested following the first year of implementation, and is being actively monitored by the Board.
The Board has been reconsidering the subsidies in the current environment, to determine an appropriate balance of investing in future members and the use of membership fees.
Do you have a perspective to share with the Board about exam subsidies? Contact us via email at [email protected] to begin the conversation.
Review the 2023 AMM proceedings, and save the date for the 2024 AMM on October 30th. We hope to see you there!
