Family medicine is welcoming more medical students into the profession than ever before: 1,449 positions were filled, or 85 per cent. The results also show an increase in the total number of positions offered, reflecting a growth of four per cent over last year.
In an effort to increase match results, the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) has implemented various initiatives to promote the value of family medicine and that being a family doctor is a meaningful and fulfilling career. This includes the Choose Family Medicine campaign, which ran from February to March 2024. This campaign was directed at medical students, emphasizing the benefits of being a family physician. In addition to the campaign, the CFPC’s advocacy work—including the Prescription for Primary Care and Equitable and Fair Remuneration for Family Physicians—calls on governments to invest in and support fair remuneration, reduce paperwork, and champion team-based care models like the CFPC’s Patient’s Medical Home vision.
Making sure that medical students, both present and future, choose to pursue family medicine and can do so in a supportive practice environment requires ongoing dedication and effort. The CFPC will continue to hold governments accountable, routinely advocate on behalf of family physicians, and promote the value of the profession. -
