There are 17 departments of family medicine across Canada representing diverse learners, patients, and communities.

Departments of family medicine are responsible for the training of family medicine residents, medical students, and other health care professionals. They promote innovation in curriculum, research, and quality improvement, and practise locally, nationally, and internationally.

The departments of family medicine are key partners with the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC), specifically as it relates to implementing standards for training and certification in family medicine. Faculty, teachers, learners, and researchers are represented on many CFPC Committees, are called upon for content expertise, and are agents of change for major College initiatives.
